SAW Video Game - Review - Will You Make that One Mistake that Causes You to Explode?

Your partner has been killed by Jigsaw, and he has ruined your life. Now you find that you are trapped in a seemingly deserted insane asylum where he has complete control. You know that if you can beat his vicious traps and make it out alive, you could find out exactly what motivates this maniacial serial killer.

The SAW video game is in a third-person, survival style horror game that was designed using the foundation of the SAW movie series. Not only does the game employ many of the lethal mechanical traps used by Jigsaw in the SAW movies, but also features petrifying new ones. Players have to outsmart Jigsaw in order to make it through the terrifying world he's created to either elude or escape his horrifying traps.

Saw the game is designed to take place between the first two SAW movies, and has a storyline that fits into the narrative of these popular movies while still maintaining an original story of its own. You play the role of Detective David Tapp who wakes up in a run down, deserted asylum. His longtime archenemy, Jigsaw is the one who captured him and put him here. Tapp's life has been destroyed, because he is consumed by his obsession with catching this serial killer, leaving him divorced, experiencing mental imbalances, and in a state of abandonment.

To make matters worse, Tapp's career was ruined after having to watch his long-time friend and partner be killed in one of Jigsaw's torturous traps. Now that Jigsaw has captured this frantic detective, he has the advantage.

Now Tapp has to play and survive Jigsaw's lethal games and puzzles, similar to the ones he has been investigating for years, in order to escape with his life. Tapp is not in this alone, the other people in this deadly game have a sinister connection to tap. Will Tapp even attempt to save their lives? Is he able to overcome his obsession with Jigsaw and actually be able to find him?

As Saw begins we are introduced to the main character, Detective Tapp, as he wakes up and finds he has to escape one of Jigsaw's lethal traps. The mechanical device is a metallic helmet that has been attached to Tapp's head. The only way to get out of the device is for players in the game to quickly press the right buttons, as they flash along the sides of the contraption. This is a rather simple puzzle, but it starts the game out in a manner that is nerve jolting and full of blood pumping tension.

It will not take Detective Tapp long to realize that he and several other people are trapped in an abandoned insane asylum by Jigsaw, his archenemy. A psychopath that he has been obsessed with capturing for years and whom has been labeled by the press as "Jigsaw."

Jigsaw is known for boldly stating that he has never "killed" anyone. He merely claims that he only presents people with a set of choices that determine their fate. However, the choices the victims are faced with include self-mutilation, suicide, or murder. How's that for a set of choices? His games are also based on brain teasers and puzzles which the victims have to solve quickly with a lot of pressure.

In Saw movies, Jigsaw likes asks his victims if they'd "like to play a game", in the game version his famous question will reverberate as well.

The Saw video game is not reused story from the movies.. its all brand new. Yet, you will discover many of the scenarios, characters, and violent settings are already known to movie fans. Saw the game is not only puzzled based but also includes a bit of platforming and some less than spectacular combat.

As a game player, you will discover it is fun, addictive and will have you waiting to see what will happen next. In addition to the puzzle solving, you will experience a wide variety of mini games, makeshift surgeries, picking locks and rumaging through things like a toilet filled with syringes to get a key to save your life. Don't be surprised if the 3-D view of this initially makes you feel a bit queasy. That's pretty common, unless of course you've done this before!

In order to keep the suspense level up throughout the game play, many details are kept under wraps. What you should know up front is each chapter consists of a person from Detective Tapp's past who has been imprisoned by Jigsaw, whom must be found and saved from a terrifyingly, lethal trap. These players have been placed in the asylum with the information that Detective Tapp holds the actual key to their survival inside his very gut.

You will find it is quite interesting to deal with enemies who have been loaded with explosives that are sewn and/or soldered into their limbs. I'm sure you can imagine, these enemies become very aggressive in trying to kill Tapp to get the very key to save their lives. Detective Tapp will not have many choices to get cover, but he does his best in tough situations with enemies breathing down his neck.

The simplest of Jigsaw's traps are seen in various forms such as the small but lethal roadblocks placed throughout the asylum to reduce Detective Tapp's progress. These traps include, tripwires that set off shotguns and quickly change any room into a killing field. Since these traps are designed to be life ending every time, as a player you will have to always be alert and cautious. One wrong move could turn out to be fatal.

You can get through the more complicated traps safely, if you can successfully perform relatively simple mental exercises. These traps include such things as gas leaks, explosives on timers, and locked doors. Solving them usually includes having to find an item that is hidden elsewhere in the asylum. Keep your eyes focussed and your mind alert to safely make it pass these traps.

In the Saw game, the mood is made more cold and chilling by the echoing moans and screams that resonate throughout the asylum.

If you crave a survival style horror game that requires you to figure out lots of mind-bending puzzles, Saw will make an interesting addition to your collection. Not sure if you are up to the challenge and want to have an even more exciting adventure, if so, I suggest you play SAW in the dark with the volume up really loud.
